Pre-Medical Summer Scholars (PMSS)

The Center for Diversity Affairs at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will sponsor the Pre-Medical Summer Scholars (PMSS) program in the summer of 2019. Formerly known as the Undergraduate Summer Science Enrichment Program — Phase II (USSEP II), this intensive 6-week summer program is designed for under-represented and/or disadvantaged students interested in a career in medicine (MD, DO, etc). PMSS is an MCAT preparation course facilitated by Kaplan as well as an AMCAS application preparation facilitated by medical students. Participants will receive 6 weeks of preparation here on UAMS campus to complete this program.

Pre-Medical Summer Scholars Highlights

  • Kaplan test prep program
    • Regularly-scheduled lectures delivered throughout the duration of the program
    • Online Kaplan courses will be available to the students
  • Multiple full-length practice MCAT
    • To help the participants identify their test-taking strengths and weaknesses and track the progress throughout the program
    • Participants will have the opportunities to discuss difficult questions with each other, the facilitators, and the instructors after each exam
  • AMCAS application sessions
    • Facilitated by medical students who just went through the process successfully a year prior
    • The facilitators will walk the participants through the application process
  • Mock interviews
    • Two will be administered, the first one will be with medical students; observations and suggestions will be offered at the end of the session
    • The second mock interview will be conducted with current UAMS College of Medicine faculty
  • Personal statement writing
    • The medical students will work with the participants on their personal statements to ensure they stand out from the rest of the applicant pool
  • Networking and shadowing opportunities
    • Providing the participants a chance of meeting UAMS faculty physicians in their specialties of interest
  • Weekly “Lunch & Learn” sessions
    • UAMS faculty will be invited during lunch once a week to talk to the participants and answer some questions
  • Stipend and on-campus housing
    • A stipend will be provided to the student as well as on-campus housing for students living a distance away from Little Rock
